Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
My name is Lauren First and I am from Columbus, Ohio. I attended Kent State University for college. As of July 2017, I am a newly registered nurse working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In addition to this career I am very passionate about, I also love competing in the NPC bikini division. I have competed for the past 3 years and have loved every second of it! This year I hope to obtain my pro card!
What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?
I love being able to find a group of people all passionate about the same thing. Not only is fitness a “YOU vs. YOU” sport, it gives you the opportunity to find people with a similar interest and support them in the process. A big chunk of my close friends were found through fitness and we love being able to support each other!
How long have you been into fitness?
I grew up doing gymnastics and dance since I was 4 years old. Freshman year of college is when I discovered weight lifting and I have stuck with it ever since!
How did you get into fitness?
It was actually due to an ex-boyfriend at the time. He got me into going to the gym on the daily basis in the beginning of our relationship! My freshman year of college is when I first attended a fitness competition with him and I really loved all the sparkly bikinis, toned looking women, and just the atmosphere itself. Once our relationship turned for the worse, I decided to begin competing to make him jealous! I’m glad did that lol
What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?
It was actually this past year in 2017. I always said I compete because it’s just something I find fun! I never really had the intention to go far with it because my main focus is my full time career as a nurse. BUT…I placed 3rd in my class at Jr Nationals last year (which was very close to getting my pro card). So, this year I am serious and will do everything it takes to hopefully get my pro card this year!
How has fitness impacted your life?
I have found myself through fitness! I am able to have a place to go if I’m feeling down. Fitness has brought a pact of amazing people into my life that I know I can turn to if needed. It has brought me the most amazing boyfriend I could ever ask for. Together, now, we are building a prep team that is growing day by day. I have found my purpose in this world and it is all because of fitness!
What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?
The biggest piece of advice I can give to anyone is knowing that consistency is key! It can get frustrating possibly not seeing any progress right away. This isn’t an overnight fix! When you stick with something, keep doing it for a while and enjoy the process!
