IMG_9066Tell me a little about yourself and your background?

I am an IFBB Bikini Pro and have both my Bachelors and Masters in Exercise Science. My research in my Masters focused on how different types of dieting affect weight loss and weight regain. I am the owner of LoCoFit, which is an online coaching and consulting business, and a co-host on two podcasts – Redefine Healthy Radio and The Unglamorous Life.

What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?

The aspect of fitness I enjoy the most is the continual self-development. No matter what your goals may be whether they are physique based, performance based or health based, there is always some aspect of self-development.

How long have you been into fitness?

I started weight lifting in high school as part of our track workouts and immediately loved it! After I graduated high school I started lifting daily and did my first show in 2011. I’ve been weight training ever since.

How did you get into fitness?

‘Fitness’ as far as exercise, started pretty young for unhealthy, disordered reasons. I was anorexic for many years growing up so used exercise as a means to calorie burn. But it wasn’t until I really found competing that I actually understood the importance of fueling your body properly and getting stronger. Since then I’ve turned the once negative in my life (training because I didn’t like how I looked) to a positive (training because I enjoy it and it challenges me).

What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?

My first show made me go ‘oh shit I have no clue what I’m doing’ but I knew that I really wanted to pursue it more seriously. At this point I had started my undergraduate program and was excited to be learning more in the field while also learning through my experiences and errors. After several years of competing, I turned my focus to not only competing and learning for myself but to then help others, too. That is how my business started and has now evolved into coaching, speaking and content creation over the past several years.

How has fitness impacted your life?

Fitness has given me a way to give back and educate others. There is literally nothing as rewarding as helping someone through their fitness journey – because it will not only make them leaner, stronger and healthier, but it will impact their life in so many other positive ways. Fitness has an amazing way of doing that!

What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?

Just start. Just take that first step. We all make mistakes but you will never get anywhere without taking that first (very hard, very scary) step. Find credible people to learn from as there is so much great information out now through podcasts, books, seminars, etc. Remain open minded and always continue to learn and self-develop. But even with all the knowledge in the world you can hold yourself back if you do not simply start!
