Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
Hi I’m Catalina. I am 20 years old and I was born in Santiago, Chile. I moved to Miami, FL in 2011 and have been living here ever since. I love to travel, write, cook, paint and exercise. I am currently the owner of Catalina Montes Fitness LLC, my fitness coaching business. I train people both in person and online and help them achieve their fitness goals. I want to expand my business by creating eBooks, fitness guides, and more cool content that is currently in the making. I love learning new things all the time and I am always busy doing something that will get me closer to my goals.
What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?
I love everything about fitness, but my favorite part about it is definitely the mental change that it comes with it. Fitness has allowed me to become strong minded by pushing me through every single limit I ever put on myself. It has also helped me overcome most of my fears and insecurities.
How long have you been into fitness?
Throughout most of my life, I never really did enjoy exercise until I tried swimming. I was on the swimming team for about 2 years and was truly passionate about it. My gym journey started in 2013, but I was the usual cardio bunny that would spend hours on the elliptical machine and would train legs here and there. It wasn’t until September 2016 that I actually started taking weight lifting seriously. That’s when it became a habit and a part of my daily life. Now I can’t imagine life without it.
How did you get into fitness?
I guess the honest answer to this would be that I was unhappy with my body. I was the typical skinny-fat body type with very little muscle mass. I really wanted to grow my legs and have a flat stomach. I started doing lots of cardio and restrictive diets in sophomore year of high school. This resulted in a very bad relationship with both food and exercise. Slowly, I learned more and more about weightlifting and how it could completely transform my body and mind. I also learned that food is FUEL. When I truly became committed to fitness was when my perspective changed on both food and exercise. I started working out to feel good and strong, not to look a certain way.
What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?
Even though I had been working out regularly for quite a while, the last few months of 2017 were extremely tough for me because I was dealing with really bad binge eating and anxiety. To the point that I was doing it every single day and it would hold me back from exercising, socializing, and from many other regular day-to-day activities. Before 2018 started I realized that I needed to make a big change in my life if I wanted to get rid of this terrible, energy consuming bad habit once and for all. I hired my coach Justin and set a goal to compete for the NPC by the end of this year. This is when I finally let go of my bad eating habits and I have never been in a better mental/physical state than now.
How has fitness impacted your life?
Fitness completely changed my life and I can’t imagine where I would be right now if it wasn’t for it. Fitness is more than just exercising the body, it exercises the mind too. You learn about patience, persistence, and determination.
What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?
Start where you are, one step at a time. Don’t compare yourself to others; allow yourself time and space for improvement. Stop waiting for the “right moment” to come, because guess what, it never will! Leave the excuses behind and act on your goals. Action is key to achieving success. Whether it is weight lifting, running, swimming, boxing, or whatever it is that you like to do, my advice is to start NOW!
