Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
I have always been fit and active but I was never happy with my appearance. I used to constantly starve myself and over eat. I tried every diet under the sun and I used to run a lot. Eventually I discovered weight training. I really enjoyed getting strong. Once I got to grips with my nutrition and found a healthy balance, the weight started falling off me and I felt amazing! In the background, I was working 9-5 but I knew there had to be more to life. I decided to pursue my passion to become a personal trainer and online coach.
What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?
I love heavy lifting! I am known for disliking cardio – especially running. I just find it so boring!! But I have found some forms of cardio I enjoy – like Thai Boxing!
How long have you been into fitness?
As far as I can remember. I played hurling and camogie and once I was old enough to go to the gym I started to use the treadmill. My parents were runners so I tried it out but I was never any good at it!
How did you get into fitness?
I always disliked my body growing up. It’s sad but I always felt like the ‘fat friend’. I did every type of exercise trying to battle my weight but when I discovered weight training I actually really enjoyed it and my body changed as a result.
What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?
I was so miserable in work and other aspects of life, but I had this idea to become a personal trainer. Then I realized I had to be my own advertisement. By documenting my journey online, there was no turning back. I know it sounds like a cliché but ‘once you see results, it becomes an addiction’.
How has fitness impacted your life?
Every area of my life has improved. My mindset is completely different. I no longer see exercise as a punishment but as part of my life that makes me stronger and happier. It has given me amazing opportunities and loads of new friends with similar mindsets!
What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?
I would always advise to get a good trainer so that you get a program suited toward your goals. Otherwise you may end up going around in circles and wasting a lot of effort before you eventually get help!
