Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
My name is Stef, I’m 24, and am currently teaching Grade 9 Geography. Outside of the whole fitness lifestyle online, I love to eat, travel and cook. I’m always trying new recipes and looking for new ones to try. I’m like any person in their early 20’s, trying to figure life out, but also having no idea what’s to come. I went to school to be a teacher and was lucky enough to get hired right away, I love teaching and knowing that I am making a difference in society, one student at a time.
What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?
I love the way I feel during and after a workout. When I am at the gym I always have my music playing and am focused. I love being able to challenge myself and push myself to achieve more and do better than the last workout. It also is the absolute best way to relieve stress and distract myself if there’s a lot going on in my mind.
How long have you been into fitness?
I have been really dedicated and focused on fitness since 2015, that’s when I finally decided I needed to change. I had played sports on and off but got serious about it and started my fitness journey March 2015.
How did you get into fitness?
I have always been athletic, playing sports in high school, but then got busy in university and gave up on the whole fitness aspect of my life. It wasn’t until 2015 when I was frustrated and fed up with myself that I finally decided to take control of my life and my fitness levels. I started with Kayla Itsines BBG after seeing posts of transformations on Instagram and wanted to transform my body like these woman had been doing. I decided that if all these woman were able to change their bodies and lives for the better, why couldn’t I? From there that sparked my love for working out, which later shifted from a cardio based workout plan to now weight lifting.
What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?
I think I decided to make a change when I finally got sick and tired of hating myself and my body. My clothes weren’t fitting anymore, I was embarrassed of how I looked and I didn’t want that to be my life forever. I was tired of feeling sorry for myself and wanted to see a change. I knew I couldn’t live like that anymore and decided enough was enough. So I got up one morning and decided to head to the gym and workout, then purchased BBG and it’s been a journey since then. I’ve had many ups and downs but in January of this year I decided I really wanted to challenge myself and see what I could achieve in 2018.
How has fitness impacted your life?
Fitness has changed my life in so many ways. The relationships I have made have impacted my life in so many ways, I have traveled around the world to see friends, I have constant support and I have people who stand behind me and cheer me on no matter what. I have also been fortunate to travel to a number of places to meet people and attend events, which I never would have thought would have been something I would be doing. I think the biggest thing that has impacted me is just hearing from people that were in the same position as where I started, seeing their mentality shift and grow. Knowing that I have reached just one person is enough to make it all worth it. It’s also changed my life in the more physical way, working everyday towards loving my body more and more and being proud of what I have accomplished.
What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?
The best advice I can give is just get up one morning and start, I know that’s so cliché but it’s so true. I sat around for years hating what I had and was becoming and then finally one morning I had enough. My biggest regret is not starting sooner, so for anyone wanting to make a change, do it. Get a support system, find someone to keep you accountable, download a new playlist, get a new workout outfit and just begin. You will never ever regret making that change.
