Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
My name is Laura Maggio, I’m 28 years old and Nationally Qualified NPC bikini competitor. My whole life I was very active and playing outside every day rain, snow or sunshine. Through middle school and high school I competed in gymnastics, cheerleading and track. Sport and music has always been my therapy and has helped me get through some of my hardest times in life.
What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?
Fitness is my passion and what makes me want to jump out of bed every morning. To me health is the most important because without your health you can’t enjoy life to it’s fullest. What I enjoy most about fitness is motivating others to believe in themselves. I love seeing people happy when they start to see progress towards accomplishing their goals.
How long have you been into fitness?
I’ve played sports my whole life but changing my life style and taking fitness and nutrition to another level it has been 4 years.
How did you get into fitness?
When I was 18 I was dating a guy who was big into lifting and I would work out with him. I really enjoyed learning how to lift properly and the different exercises for each body part. Going to the gym 5 days a week and seeing the results of how I felt inside and out really felt great and I was hooked!
What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?
When I was 21, I moved to NYC and being young and living in the best city I definitely got caught up in the night life and going out with friends. I continued working out but my diet wasn’t completely off and I wasn’t consistent with working out. After a long horrible night out partying the next morning I literally remember looking at myself in the mirror and telling myself I am better than this and I can do better. From that point on I decided I wanted to make a huge lifestyle change and really focus on taking care of my life and living a healthier lifestyle. Till this day I haven’t had any hard liquor and I only drink wine occasionally when I am not prepping for a competition. I’ve never felt better and I am so happy I made these changes for myself.
How has fitness impacted your life?
My passion for fitness has made me realize I can accomplish any goal I want as long as I set my mind to it. It has taught me to love myself, enjoy life and appreciate everything I have been blessed with.
What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?
Most important when beginning this journey is to believe in yourself. It truly amazes me how powerful our minds are and what the body can accomplish when you have the right mindset. You have to be patient, don’t beat yourself up when you worked so hard the first week and you don’t see the result you want right away. Hang in there and before you know it you will start seeing progress! If you mess up one day with your meals or miss a work out don’t quit on yourself, get back on track and keep going!!! Love yourself, love your body and love life!!!!
