Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
I am a bikini competitor, powerlifter and personal trainer based out of
Toronto, Canada. I came to Canada in 2005 from Pakistan and fell in love
with strength training in in 2011 when I was a student at the University
of Waterloo. Currently I am preparing to compete AND WIN at the Toronto
Pro Qualifier on June 1st!
What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?
The fact that I am in complete control of it
How long have you been into fitness?
How did you get into fitness?
In university, I was sick of the typical student lifestyle of studying and
partying and wanted a healthy change. I wanted to be active and strong and
so asked my friend to teach me how to lift.
What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?
In 2013 I travelled through Europe which was amazing but during my travel
I lost 10 lb. of muscle which made me feel depressed. I missed going to the
gym and training. At that point I realized that I actually cannot live
How has fitness impacted your life?
Fitness has impacted every area of my life in an extremely positive way. I
don’t even know where to begin!
Of course the physical health changes- but also mental health changes.
Coming from a Pakistani background, this is not how I am expected to live
my life- so to get here has taken a lot of struggle, resilience and grit,
and has grown my character immensely.
What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?
My advice is to be consistent and to gain knowledge. Women: Don’t be
afraid of pushing yourself to lift heavier weights. I can attribute 90% of
my physique to heavy lifting.
