Tell me a little about yourself and your background?
My name is Sabrina Bonaiuto, I am 22 years old and recently just graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, and am currently fulfilled my dreams as a full-time yoga teacher. I strive to live life as authentically as possible, through my service to others.
What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?
This is a really tough question, I personally benefit from so many different aspects of fitness from yoga to lifting to running. I would say that my favorite part of this all is the control that it gives me. We, as human beings, are so out of control, yet many of us always want to be in control – myself included. We enjoy running the show, we enjoy knowing the outcome of situations, and in our day to lives we are not always given that opportunity. With fitness, I feel as though I am in control. I control how much effort I put in. I control how hard I go. I control my end goal by the amount of work I put in and that is rewarding for me.
How long have you been into fitness?
I have been into fitness for as long as I can remember. When I was nine years old, my parents had me in a kids yoga class. I was not a team sport kind of kid.
How did you get into fitness?
I remember getting these magazines for pre-teen girls, and they had these little work outs in them that I would do in my room, probably while blasting Hilary Duff or something! As mentioned, I was not a competitive, team-sport type of kid growing up, so I was always doing some sort of independent fitness work – lifting, yoga, running, etc.
What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?
When I was seventeen years old, I had a procedure done on my heart for an existing condition. This condition was not supposed to stop me from playing sports, or working out, however, over the years it did. It actually forced me to quite the only sport I ever enjoyed in High School, which was Cross Country/Track & Field. Once I had this operation done, I was free of any heart problems, and I felt free again. I felt in control again, and able to do what I truly enjoyed, and that’s when I seriously began focusing on fitness and my overall health.
How has fitness impacted your life?
Fitness has impacted my life in so many ways, but two areas of my life that really stand out is that it has helped me deal with and manage my anxiety as well as any confidence issues I’ve dealt with over the years. It allows me to feel mentally clear, and as I mentioned before – it allows me to feel in control in a life filled with so much uncertainty and unknown. It has allowed me to feel confident in the skin I walk around in; it has also allowed me to connect with people. I connect with people through health and wellness; it has even brought me to my passion of teaching yoga.
What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?
Don’t give up and don’t settle. Think of fitness like dating around to find the perfect soulmate – try new things, try new activities, gyms, classes, whatever it may be! Find those activities that make you feel ALIVE and then do them! Even if they are challenging, even if they bring you frustration, just keep doing what makes you feel good in the end. Don’t do it for the looks, do it for the way it makes you feel.
