debijanefit-1578278327579Tell me a little about yourself and your background?

I was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. I have 4 children, ages range from 10 – 20 years old. I am 46.

As a child I always played sport, but it was only as a young teenager that I started doing group fitness classes with my older sisters. The weight section of a gym totally intimidated me. My diet (a word I TOTALLY despise now) was yoyo between very low calories to eat whatever and so my metabolism was really messed up. I grew up in the era of Fat Free is the best way to lose weight. I found that getting to my “goal weight” skinny was just never going to happen. I believe my best shape was attained after my 4 children in my late 30’s. Not the usual route but I found the time to fit my workouts in and set goals to motivate me. I also made carbs & healthy fats my friend. I changed my mindset to healthy living and a healthy lifestyle rather than that “D” word. I started teaching fitness and my career in fitness grew.

What aspect of fitness do you enjoy the most?

I love that you can work out anywhere and really keep your body healthy at any age. There really are NO excuses to getting fit and staying fit….it just depends on how bad you want it! I love HIIT workouts, strength workouts and long cardio workouts. I mix up these 3 each week.

How did you get into fitness?

Seriously was about 8 years ago when I moved over to Dallas, TX and started a more dedicated career in fitness. I’ve always been an avid exerciser but developed a more hard-core approach when I moved to Dallas and got into endurance exercise.

What was a turning point for you to take it seriously?

When I moved to Dallas, a friend knew that I needed to earn some extra dollars, so she invited me to start teaching bootcamp classes at the local Rec center. I said yes! I then decided to get a personal training certification and start personal training too. I was also invited to start bike riding with a group of friends and so my endurance cardio love developed. I found out that I was actually good at it and so my passion for that endurance high increased and the rest is history. As I’ve grown my business, set new goals on the bike and started marathon running I’ve been able to stay motivated to be in my best shape.

How has fitness impacted your life?

Fitness has made me a better mother as I have the energy to do more. My example of a healthy lifestyle is impacting my children’s lives as they strive to also lead a healthy lifestyle and make good choices. Fitness helped me find a flexible career that I love. I help others to find their heathy lifestyle – what could be more rewarding than seeing your clients crushing goals and changing their lives inside and out. Exercise has that power & I would love for more people to be aware of that! Small daily changes can really lead to life changing habits & goal crushing AWESOMENESS.

What words of advice or encouragement would you like to give to someone who is just starting out or would like to start but doesn’t know where to begin?

Just begin because today is as good a day as any to start! My favorite word – Consistency!! Consistency is the key to any change. Be patient in the journey because that is really where the learning happens, and you never really arrive. Life will always be a journey of learning and discovery. Embrace it and listen to your body! You will have seasons of “crushing it” and seasons of “let’s just maintain” and that’s all good!! Life may get in the way but that’s when you need to decide how bad do you want it?? You need to be able to PUSH yourself! Listen to some motivational talks daily to keep you fired up and then …. just BREATHE!
